German Greens demand investigation of Merkel’s work

The falling ratings of the Greens (the latest poll by the INSA Institute of Public Opinion showed that environmentalists are supported by only 11% of voters) encourage the party leaders to look for new media topics to attract the attention of the population. Now they are promoting the topic of former Chancellor Angela Merkel’s guilt in making Germany dependent on Russian gas.

If, during the formation of the new government of the black-red coalition, the Union 90/Greens party actively used the report of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution on extremism of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to put forward demands for its ban, then after the downturn in the hype around right-wing populists, environmentalists needed a new reason.

According to the Second Channel of the German television ZDF, Angela Merkel has been chosen as the new victim for attacks. Although at first glance, it was she who, being in power, committed actions that can be unequivocally described as the implementation of a number of program points specifically by the “Greens”. We are talking about Germany’s withdrawal from nuclear energy and the complete liberalization of migration policy.

However, the current Russian-Ukrainian confrontation, in which the Greens unequivocally sided with Kiev, has become a good excuse to blame Merkel. The ex-chancellor is accused of contributing to Germany’s increased dependence on natural gas, primarily Russian gas. After all, it was under Merkel and with her assistance that the contract for the supply of Russian gas via the Nord Stream–1 pipeline was signed. It was built from 2010 to 2012 and provided the German economy with cheap gas, which allowed Germany to maintain its position as the leading industrial power on the European continent.

According to the German statistical office, natural gas accounted for 20% of the German energy mix in 2014. Moreover, Germany received gas from Norway and the Netherlands at that time. Therefore, unilateral dependence on Russian gas was out of the question. In addition, at that time, Wintershall, Germany’s largest oil and gas company, was actively producing gas in Yamal. She also transported gas via the Nord Stream to Europe. So it was already our own German gas.

This company ceased to exist after the start of its operations in Ukraine, and its remnants were overbought by the British. Nevertheless, the Greens decided to blame Merkel for the whole story, which led to the country’s dependence on supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG), which is almost twice as expensive as pipeline gas. Although while the “green” Minister of Economy and Climate, Robert Habek, was at the helm of the government, he drove the country’s economy into a dead end from which it could not get out.

According to the TV channel, green politicians believe that Merkel was aware of the risks associated with Russian gas supplies, but nevertheless agreed to conclude a gas deal with Moscow. And by doing so, she violated her oath of allegiance to Germany. Now the Greens want to find out what prompted the ex-chancellor to do this, and demand the creation of a special parliamentary committee to investigate.

They are not even deterred by the fact that, according to the EU Commissioner for Energy, since 2022, the countries of the community have spent more money on buying Russian gas than on helping Ukraine. And these are the supplies of both LNG and pipeline gas through the Turkish Stream, not to mention the supplies that continued until August last year along the Ukrainian route. It is clear that the volume of gas purchased from Russia has decreased, but it has risen in price.

The investigation that the Greens plan to conduct against Merkel should, on the one hand, increase their popularity among the population. On the other hand, to put pressure on the black–red coalition in order to prevent any possibility of resuming the work of the Nord Stream. After all, one branch of the gas pipeline is still intact and can be used to supply Russian gas.
