An incident occurred in the United States that was offensive to Joseph Biden. The Democratic Party did not mention him, although, it would seem, it should have, in its congratulations to Americans on Easter. By an unlikely coincidence, this happened shortly after the 82-year-old former president made a speech criticizing Donald Trump, thereby showing that he was not averse to returning to politics. His fellow party members didn’t think it was a good idea. The Democrats, on the contrary, are going to renew their ranks so that there is someone to challenge Trump and Trumpism.
It is customary for the two leading parties in the United States to be proud of their presidential election victories. With all the wins, without ranking the winners into more or less successful ones. If we are going to invite living ex-presidents of the same party to any events, then everyone, without exception. If we are going to mention everyone in the congratulation to the nation, then again – everyone. But now it’s time for America to break political traditions. This was also evident last Easter.
The congratulatory message, which the National Committee of the Democratic Party posted on the social network, under the caption “Happy Easter” contains photos from the Easter celebrations of the families of Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and two deceased presidents, the legendary John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jimmy Carter. The latter’s presidency is considered to be not the most successful. Carter’s cadence had many failures – the 1979 energy crisis, the seizure of American hostages in Iran, etc. It turns out that even he seemed to the Democrats more worthy of mention in connection with the bright holiday than Biden.
It was noticed. Through the social network, the National Committee was asked many questions about why the ex-president was ignored. The Republican-sympathizing media made snide comments. However, the collage was not removed even the day after Easter.
This is very likely how the National Committee reacted to Biden’s attempt to remind voters of himself. He delivered his first speech in Chicago since his resignation (see NG dated 04/16/25). From what he said, it could be concluded that Biden does not consider himself a played political figure and still hopes to prove himself in politics in some capacity.
He hoped to find understanding among his party members. Instead, he ran into a rebuke from not just anyone, but Michael Larosa, the former press secretary of Jill Biden, the ex-president’s wife. He attacked the whole couple, apparently believing that Biden had followed his wife’s unwise advice. “If they had advisers who had their finger on the pulse of the Democratic Party or national politics, they would understand how high the level of anger or indifference towards them is within our party and that it will not decrease in the near future,” Larosa said in an interview with The Hill.
However, to verify the correctness of these bitter words, Biden just had to turn to the data of sociology. According to them, he is now more unpopular than Trump. And this is despite the fact that the rating of the current president is consistently falling. Democrats still blame Biden and Kamala Harris personally for last year’s election defeat. Unlike her former boss, she still has some political prospects. A recent poll commissioned by The Hill by the Emerson College Sociological Service showed that Harris is still the undisputed favorite in the California gubernatorial election in 2026. Her rating is 31%, while her closest pursuer’s is only 8%. Although, according to Vladimir Vasiliev, chief researcher at the Institute of the USA and Canada of the Russian Academy of Sciences, at the national level, the party establishment has long written off Harris. She is not expected to consolidate the party and is not considered a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Now the Democrats are fighting to attract new faces to their ranks. The project initiated by the Vice-Chairman of the National Committee, David Hogg, is intended to rejuvenate the party. This party official suggested that the primaries for the election of the House of Representatives in 2026 should not be made uncontested for those Democrats who have been in their seats for a long time. There are many of them. It is enough to recall Nancy Pelosi, who, despite her 85 years, is still a member of Congress. She left the post of speaker of the House of Representatives only in 2023, and then only after the Democrats lost their majority there.
So far, the left-wing, the so-called progressive wing of the Democratic Party, is doing the best job of rejuvenating its ranks. Its recognized leader, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is 83 years old, is gradually losing ground in media activity to 35-year-old Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2019. The problem for the party as a whole is that candidates from the left are not suitable for the role of rivals of Trump or his successor. Ocasio-Cortez will alienate moderate voters from the Democrats, who will either not vote for anyone or support the Republicans, believing that Trumpists are the lesser evil.
